Palatal Expander Treatment in Midtown Manhattan | Yoon Orthodontics NYC
Straight Smiles Start with the Right Foundation
what is a palatal expander?
A palatal expander is a custom-made orthodontic device designed to gently widen the upper jaw (palate) over time. By gradually expanding the palate, we create the space needed for teeth to align properly—setting the foundation for a healthy, beautiful smile.
how does it work?
The palatal expander is attached to the upper molars and gently activated over time to widen the jaw. The process typically takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on your unique anatomy and treatment goals.
Key benefits:
Creates space to prevent or reduce the need for tooth extractions
Improves bite alignment
Enhances breathing in some cases
Supports better overall orthodontic results
who needs a palatal expander?
A palatal expander may be recommended by our Midtown Manhattan orthodontic team if your child, teen, or even you as an adult experience:
Crowding of teeth
Crossbite (upper teeth fit inside lower teeth)
Impacted teeth (teeth stuck under the gums)
Narrow upper jaw
Breathing or snoring issues related to oral structure
At Yoon Orthodontics, we evaluate each case individually using advanced imaging and diagnostics to ensure the best outcome.
instructions & tips
Wash your hands: Always start with clean hands.
Have good lighting: Sit in a well-lit area or use a flashlight. You may want another person to assist.
Tilt the head back: Lie back with the mouth open wide.
Insert the key:
Locate the small hole in the middle of the expander (in the “gear” section).
Gently insert the key into the hole facing the front of the mouth.
Push toward the throat:
Push the key back toward the throat in a slow, smooth motion until it stops and a new hole appears.
Do not reverse the turn or pull the key forward again.
Remove the key:
Slide the key out toward the throat without pulling it forward (this prevents undoing the turn).
