Palatal Expander
A palatal expander is used when a developing child’s mouth is too narrow. It works by applying consistent outward pressure to the back molars, in effect gently pushing apart the palatal bones, which have yet to fuse. The space that this action creates then naturally fills in with bone. Some of the main benefits of an expanded upper arch include an increase in space for new teeth to come in, an improved bite, space for the tongue to sit properly on the roof of the mouth, and in some cases, a more open airway.
